What is REFLECT?

Reflect is an educational web site from the University of Manchester and is intended for informational purposes only. It does not provide medical advice or services. Do not use the content to make a diagnosis, treat a health problem or replace a doctor's judgment. Reflect does not take the place of regular medical check-ups. If you have any concerns about your health, talk to a GP. Do not disregard or delay seeking medical advice because of something you read on this web site. The information on this web site is a summary intended to provide a broad understanding of cancer prevention. Who has reviewed REFLECT?

The website has been developed as part of a research project for which ethics approval was obtained from The University of Manchester Research Ethics Committee (UREC) (16288). The processing and handling of any data collected by the website is handled in accordance with the Privacy Notice for Research Participants and the associated Data Management Plan (DMP) for the research project (88829), reviewed by the Information Governance Office at The University of Manchester. The website has undergone an internal test programme prior to public release and has been approved for release by the research team and the Research IT Strategy and Change Management Board (RIT SCMB) at The University of Manchester.

How does REFLECT handle data?

Research IT at The University of Manchester handles data in compliance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. By using the website, users agree that researchers at The University of Manchester and collaborating institutions, associated with the development of the website can use any data collected for research purposes only. All research data handling is compliant with our Privacy Notice for Research Participants.

Is any data Person Identifying Information (PII) linked to my identity?

The data you enter may be associated with you via the User ID entered at the start.

The email you use to register is also used to send you your results when you complete the survey.

How will you protect my data?

All transmissions over the internet are encrypted using a standard TLS/SSL encryption protocol and is thus protected in transit. The data you send us is stored on systems that are access-controlled and data is only accessible by project researchers and nominated collaborators. The StorageConnect system is also accessible by select members of Research IT. Access to StorageConnect is controlled by Research IT on a person-by-person basis and will not be granted to individuals not affiliated with the research project to which the data is attached. StorageConnect is backed-up and replicated daily. Records stored in StorageConnect are given an anonymous user ID and are not identified against any username or password you may have been asked to enter into the website.

What will you use the data for?

The web apps called REACT and REFLECT will be used to perform an initial screening assessment of risk. Users input answers to a series of lifestyle questions and the tool computes a risk score. If the participants score above a certain threshold, they will move onto phase 2 of the study which is to use a mobile app for 6 months as a means of lifestyle intervention. They will also be offered blood tests to measure their biological age before and after the study to test whether the support offered by the app has been able to reduce the imbalance between their biological and chronological age.

Who will you share the data with?

The data will be shared with researchers at The University of Manchester and our EU partner with no personal details. The anonymised data may also be shared via publication.

Does REFLECT collect usage statistics or analytics?

The website connects automatically to Google Analytics servers for the purposes of usage monitoring.

This information is transmitted to servers not owned by The University of Manchester, and is hence shared with the third-parties who operate the service. We make use of this service to monitor how many people are using the website. This allows us to improve future versions of the website. This data is only accessible to Research IT staff and is not shared with other services.

Does REFLECT access third-party content?

REFLECT contains links to websites. If you click on a link, you will be directed to that site. Note that these external sites are not operated by the website provider. Therefore, we would advise you to review the Privacy Policy of these websites. We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for, the accuracy of content, the privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.
